As part of our unit on Africa, groups of students were assigned topics to research (such as African history, African ecosystems, the people of Africa, and climates in Africa.) They used the following books on Epic to obtain information:
The students also used a Padlet wall to find out about various African art forms:
After a lesson on figurative versus literal representations, the students designed African-inspired art projects that symbolized some aspect of the information they learned during their research. They used this Think Sheet as they planned their projects.
Each group also designed a website using Adobe Slate to explain the history of their art form, the information in their research, and the symbolic connection between their art piece and their research. Upon completing the project, we hosted an African Art Exhibit, inviting parents, other students, administrators, and teachers to come and view our work. The students also practiced essential skills such as eye contact, body language, tone of voice, and poise as they explained their projects to guests.
